"A disk read error occurred" and other errors!

(xp64bit->7 64bit updgrade).
After a windows update I restarted the computer and tried several times but got the following error: "A disk read error occurred.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".
I had to insert the windows 7 disk to repair and go to a earlier
system restore point.
After this I had a successful reboot which I tested again several times (all successful).
I tried the update again and this time was able to reboot successfully for the several times I tried it.
Today I installed Microsoft office and
upon reboot have the same problem.
This time none of the repair tools has helped me.---> EDIT: I unplugged all secondary internals and all external accessories and did the first system restore and the computer booted.
I am going to try reformatting and reinstalling
but my other questions below are still relevant.

In addition to this, the upgrade from windows xp to windows 7 somehow corrupted the boot table of one of my internal hard drives ( but not the one being installed on), which is very odd to me (and very sad that most of the drive was unrecoverable).
Finally,
I was having errors with explorer restarting every time I tried to rename files the first time (but after the restart it would work once).

Drive(s) were all working perfectly and had passed all SMART thresholds and had above 90% fitness on all my drive.

mb: nforce 680i sli
main disk: WD WD1500AHFD 150gb

I have some important files on my main drive right now that I want to recover easily if possible before reformatting and trying again.
(EDIT: Recovered, but questions below still stand).
In addition I want to avoid this in the future if the cause can be identified.
Also, what are some reasons my other internal corrupted during install ( SMART data looks perfect, drive is working)? Does it use a second internal ( if one exist) for performance?

Thank you for any help you can give!

Keys to the Problem "A disk read error occurred" and other errors!

Your system is using a controller driver for the hard drives that needs improvement.
I suggest you go to the website of the maker of the controller, and look for the latest drivers.
If only for Vista, you can download to the desktop, and right click for
"Troubleshoot compatibility' and choose Vista.
